Last week, we sent out a call for help in creating a tagline for ‘the improvise life’ and were knocked out by the response we got, both as Comments and as emails: an amazingly wonderful and wide array of descriptors and points of view + some disagreement (which we embrace). Pamela Hovland, who has been an essential part of the website from the start wrote : “Taglines are so…… conventional. Why not let people explore the blog until they figure out what the site is about? Perhaps the investigation/perusing/discovering is more in the spirit of the blog”

We totally agree that “investigation/perusing/discovering ” is deeply in the spirit of the blog. Our thinking is that a tagline might invite folks who are moving fast to slow down and do just that: discover what is here. We thought we’d try the idea out and see what happens: our evolution is trial-and-error and learn-as-you-go…Perhaps the question is: Would having a tagline do any harm? (As always, we welcome your two cents…)

Here’s the list of the taglines contributed over the last week (please let us know if we missed any) in addition to our original one …resourcefulness as a daily practice… With big THANKS for your help and thought:

…making the most of what we have…

…life as delight

…daily creativity

…riffing on living

…puttering around in life’s garage

…domestic explorations

…absorbing ideas – exploring variations

…re-think…
re-do…real-eyes

…improvisation as an imaginative act (or practice)

…no rehearsing – just wing it!

…an invitation… to learn, discover, ponder, pause and play

…where Serendipity meets Invention

…a daily reminder to be…

…inspiration in every direction

…resourceful creativity

…where inspiration meets transpiration

…a slight shift in view

…consider this unique solution

…make the most…of the least….do it best.”

…just improvise

…inspired by true events

…creations from slightly out of the box

…great idea – I hadn’t thought of that!

…a touch of McGiver

…odd ideas that work

…trust your instincts…

…living, one project at a time…

…your app for life…

…revealing the wonder within the ordinary

…think without the box

…making up, making do, making life

…out-of-the-box thinking, in-the-moment living

…If you can’t hunt with a dog … hunt with a cat!

…Stop!  And discover…

…the breeze you need everyday

…treasure box…

…the spice for your creativity…

And we just had to include this email from Stacey L, who described what she gets from the daily posts, along with eleven taglines, which are a great example of free association and riffing on a theme:

The lines you’ve offered below are your positioning, not your tagline. What I get out of your emails is a daily dose of creativity, a great little idea – often why didn’t I think of that – so simple, yet smart, a different perspective of the objects in my everyday life, looked at differently equals great new creative ideas. I am not a copywriter, but here are my thoughts:

The improvised life….

Everyday, inspired

The everyday, inspired

Inspire your everyday

Creative inspiration in the everyday

See your world a little differently

Creativity, revealed

Your daily creative inspiration

Creative juices, squeezed daily

Be inspired by the everyday

Reinventing the everyday

Reinventing Everyday

Now we’ve really got a lot to mull…What do you think?…

  1. I like a tagline, I’m for effective information — anything that can very succintly invite a new reader is positive for both you & reader. Your blog, though, has such a wonderful title (poetic and descriptive) that your tagline must add just a little something. Of all the ideas above I found “thinking without the box” the perfect match for “The improvised life”. Good luck!

  2. so sorry I missed the chance to get on board with these taglines! I personally read the improvised life to get my daily dose of inspiration. and I couldn’t be more sincere about that. that’s what this site brings to my life.

    so what about that?

  3. I like “Thinking without the box” too!!
    It’s perfect.

  4. “…making the most of what we have”
Not to oversell my own suggestion, but I had an additional thought. Using that phrase for the tag line is a sort of recycling of a classic cliche, giving it fresh depth, definition and example – making us think about something we know in a different light. That, in and of itself, is the essence of the blog, at least in my experience of it.

My other thought was really about the necessity of a tag line at all. I do think the title is a a good summation and piqued my interest.

Wherever you land, you continue to inspire creativity, inform choices, and incite change. Thanks for the work you put into it!

  5. Thanks for your take on this Betty. We’re still mulling the very idea of a tagline, and appreciate your input.
