When we were starting to think about planting our 50-square-foot terrace, we hunted around for low-profile, minimalist planters that would be unobtrusive in the 10 x 5 foot footprint, and keep it looking as spacious as possible. It proved no mean feat to find something good-looking and affordable, as we searched one website after another. After we wrote about planting ornamental grasses, a couple of readers wrote to ask where we got the planter; it seems others have had problems finding the right one too. So here’s what we found.

Our friend Maria Robledo told us of a place to buy the a dark gray fiberlass planter for our ornamental grasses, a slim 44″ long x 20″ high x 12″ inches wide. We hauled it to the Laboratory by cab from Planter Resource in NYC’s flower market; they will also ship.

It’s proven the perfect profile:

Then we started hunting around for smaller planters for the other side of the terrace, to hold herbs and some nasturtiums (pretty AND edible).  More dark planters seemed like they’d hem the space in so we looked for white ones. We finally came across Planters Etc/The Jay Scotts Company and chose the Reade Rectangle 18.5″ x 6.5″ x 5″ high for $38 shipping included. The site has a TROVE of minimalist planters of all sizes and colors.

  1. Your planters look great. Large animal water troughs also make nice looking planters. Do an image search for “Galvanized tank” to see a wide variety of sizes and shapes.

  2. Wow, good idea. I DID do a search of “galvanized tanks” on your advice and found a trove…
