We recently stumbled on a wondrously beautiful wall in the Bowery, the work of Bronx graffiti artist Cope2, known for his “throw-up” and “wildstyle” graffiti. It reminded us of the feeling we got as we walked by it: as though we suddenly walked into a different gravitational field, due to the riot of seriously joyous color.

Not long after, we realized that “The Bowery Mural” is on the same concrete slab wall that artist Keith Haring decorated over 30 years ago, and changed everyone’s view.

Since Haring first identified it as a “canvas”, a number of artists have transformed it.

Os Gemeos Summer 2009
Shepard Fairey May 2010
Barry McGee and Amaze August 2010

…A lesson ins the often transformative beauty of ad hoc painting on walls.

What big outdoor wall would you paint if you could?
