The other morning, we opened our favorite book of haiku to this astonishing three lines by Basho, written in the 17th century.

       Life in this world—
a makeshift hut
       like Sogi’s.

Such pleasure, contentment, and wonder in a simple makeshift hut made us think of ones we’ve admired at Cabin Pornlike the austere, fabulously painted ice fishing hut on the Saguenay River in Québec, Canada, above…

…the “dusty blue cabin in progress, located somewhere unknown to us”..

…this plain, dreamy cabin with an earthen roof in Norway…

…the sparest of lean-tos in the hills above Crested Butte, Colorado…

…and this red-painted open shelter with tall stove pipe in Sweden…

…All a tribute to “makeshift”…

  1. Perfect post for this morning, in a week when I seem to be too busy going to other people’s parties to get ready for my own! When in reality, hanging out in the backyard (if I had one) around a fire is what I’d rather be doing. Thanks, Sally!
