Twenty four-year-old photographer Asher Svidensky traveled to west Mongolia with the intention of documenting the lives of traditional Kazakh eagle hunters, people who tame eagles for the purpose of hunting smaller animals. In Ulgii (or ölgii), the capital of the far west, he photographed the young 13-year-old boys as they trained with their fathers, a tradition from which girls were usually excluded. He was surprised to meet a young eagle huntress, 13-year-old Ashol Pan, the daughter of an experienced eagle hunter. (more…)

The Thrilling Adventure of Familiar Frontiers Tue, 25 Feb 2014 09:42:33 +0000

(Video link HERE.) Mickey Smith is a surf photographer from Cornwall, England whose six minute video of wave riding in the ominous North Sea is a stunning, nail biting, vicarious experience for urbanistas and land-locked couch potatoes. But diving beyond the hair-raising visuals, listening to Smith’s philosophy of life is what makes this clip intriguing.

Smith says, “I never set out to be anything particular, only to live creatively and post the scope of my experience through adventure and passion… (more…)

Olympic’s Hidden Victories (Views of Fear and Flying) Mon, 17 Feb 2014 08:59:04 +0000

(Video link HERE.) We’ve been riveted by the Olympics on Sochi which we’ve been watching on TV. What interests us most is the fierce spirit we see: contenders making unexpected mistakes, falling, going off-track and off-plan, and most often CONTINUEING their run anyway, valiently with no possibility of winning. There are many victories we didn’t know about. (more…)

Pursuit of the New: Surfing with Ice and Snow Wed, 12 Feb 2014 09:05:39 +0000

Yassin Ouhilal

A source of inspiration to us over the winter months is intrepid photographer Yassine Ouhilal, who documents surf culture in some of the worlds coldest waters. A surfer himself, Yassine is Canadian born but ventures further north to the far reaches of Canada, Russia and Iceland where a small number of like-minded surfers escape the hoards in popular areas.

His photographs show surfers poised under the Northern Lights, or catching waves next to mountain glaciers. We’re not used to associating surf culture with ice and snow – we didn’t even really know it existed. While we are all sheltering from the cold, they are actually (more...)]]> 0 A Stunt Video’s FEELING of Risk (Watch at your own…risk) Thu, 06 Feb 2014 10:47:29 +0000

(Video Link HERE.) Holton Rower sent us this video of professional stunt people doing their thing.

As we watched with baited breath, we realized we knew the feeling well: of taking a risk once we’ve done everything we can to master what we are doing, but are nevertheless without a net. There are so many unknowns being in the world; we’re ALL always walking on SOME edge… (more…)

Maurizio Cattelan on Being a Loser + a Revolutionary Thu, 23 Jan 2014 09:37:01 +0000

Maurizio Cattelan

Ever since Holton Rower gave us an issue of Maurizio Cattelan’s magazine-book Toilet Paper (where we found the image above),  we’ve been following the artist’s work. Recently, we started hunting Cattelan’s words and found much about living and making that resonated: (more…)

Leaping Lebkuchen Bauhaus Style Mon, 16 Dec 2013 22:09:50 +0000

Gunta Stolzl/Bauhaus-Arkiv Berlin

Leave it to the Bauhaus to put their unique design sense to Lebkuchen, the traditional German Christmas cookies similar to gingerbread. We found these images of LEAPING animals and humans at a great visual site about Bauhaus designer Gunta Stölzl. These were made for the “White Festival” 1926.

They’re an awesome reminder to (more…)

Wheelz’s Wheelchair Freestyle: ‘See Challenges in a New Way’ Wed, 27 Nov 2013 09:09:18 +0000

(Video link here.)  We considered Sue Austin’s deep sea dives in her wheelchair among the most amazing examples of outside-the-box wheelchair thinking until we saw this splendid, energizing, deeply heartening video of Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham, a “professional hardcore sitter” pushing his wheelchair to exhilarating limits. We appreciate clips of his occasional wipe-outs, par for the course with any attempt at mastery and risk-taking. And his attitude: (more…)

shaolin monk: through practice you can skip on a wall! Tue, 29 Oct 2013 08:19:37 +0000

Tomasz Gudzowaty

We are knocked out by photographer Tomasz Gudzowaty‘s beautiful black-and-white-essay of the practices of Shaolin monks, found at IndigoJaws. We especially love this one of a monk skipping on a wall — a variation on our favorite subject of leaping and flying — made possible by rigorous and repeated practice. Lesson there…

Thanks Vanessa!

Welcome to Improvised Life’s Redesign Mon, 21 Oct 2013 08:17:38 +0000

Yes, you ARE at Improvised Life.

We’ve changed our look but not our mission. The comfortable old site, lovingly-created only 4 years ago, had become too small a container for all our ideas, and too difficult to read on the many devices people use these days. That’s how fast things change!

So we redesigned it to make reading easy and fun, allow you to JUMP around its vast archive and check out new projects and products we are developing.

We are practicing what we preach: embracing change, trying new things, seeing what happens… (more…)
