How to Dance on the Side of a Building (Video) Mon, 06 Oct 2014 21:08:09 +0000

(Video link HERE.) Don’t know about you, but we could use some fantasy flying about now.

Although we find ourselves a bit over saturated with GoPri videos and curiously jaded to their magical effects, not so with this video of acrobats “dancing” on the side of a building.  We find it even more magical with the sound OFF.

Friends With Benefits: Trading Jewels & Taking Leaps—Together Thu, 25 Sep 2014 08:00:33 +0000

Early 1900s - delivering the first cleaving blow to the massive world-famous Cullinan diamond

One of our readers, Carol E., wrote to us,

In the morning it’s The Improvised Life with my coffee and then the morning paper.

I have described you as a little jewel of a magazine that I read online every morning. Many thanks!’

We love the image of Improvised Life as a “jewel”—it rings true because for the past five years, we’ve worked ceaselessly to turn raw material (from both original projects and found content) into something personalized, polished and presented to you with (hopefully) a real sense of exchange and mutual enrichment. Even a rainy day — and difficult times — are an opportunity to leap!

Underwater Film Break with Néry’s “Narcose” Thu, 11 Sep 2014 22:00:29 +0000

(Video link HERE.) This intoxicating little under-sea film by Julie Gautier follows record-holding deep diver Guillaume Néry down, down until he experiences the confusion and euphoria of high-pressure nitrogen narcosis. A little bit scary and very much lovely, this thirteen-minute journey into the depths of the ocean and Néry’s hallucinations will throw you far out of your daily routine and into the “rapture of the deep.”

Re-entry…What We Learned On Our Summer Stay-cation Tue, 02 Sep 2014 08:01:28 +0000

Monday evening of Labor Day, we could positively FEEL the shift of air and energy as the entire country grabbed every last BIT before the official end of summer. In the park we look out on, there was SERIOUS barbecue action, music, dancing, LIFE going on. We spent the day hanging on the terrace reflecting on our three-week stay-cation that turned out way different than we had imagined. (more…)

Time to Take a Break…We’ll Be Back in September Tue, 12 Aug 2014 07:25:52 +0000

Ernst Haas

If we had to sum up the past few months with a single image, it would be this one. We’ve been roping a wild horse — life — and trying our best to go with it as we launched our Friends with Benefits subscription service and Improvised Life’s Store, saw a dear friend through a major health crisis, and navigated a recent, unexpected crisis with another. Many challenges to be sure.

We’re deeply tired and need to recharge and regroup. We’ll be back full of beans just after Labor Day as we put into practice an essential principle of an improvised life: (more…)

Music for Monday Morning (Jun Miyake) Mon, 04 Aug 2014 07:24:55 +0000

(Video link HERE.)  …perfect music for getting going on a Monday morning, as well as people dancing, leaping and gliding around in the most wonderful way (until the dark end). You can jump in anywhere to get a hit of LEAP energy.

Not content to just click one link, we can’t help but follow trails. The trails leading from this wonderful video turned us on to Japanese artist, composer, song writer Jun Miyake.

After buying Lillies of the Valley, we’ve been listening to his music on Spotify.

A groove.

(Video link HERE.) In the annals of “breaking stereotypes” is this thrilling, mind-boggling, closer-than-bird’s-eye view of two Japanese schoolgirls doing seriously Ninja Parcour — usually the realm of young men — all around the city of Atami.

Learning to Fly at Home (Yves Lecoq) Mon, 28 Jul 2014 08:49:06 +0000

Yves Lecoq

Somewhere in our massive virtual rambles, we came across the images of Yves Lecoq, one of the best photographic fantasists we’ve seen. His images seem absolutely real.

One of his ongoing themes is humans rigging ways to fly. That, of course, would be us. (more…)

Surfing Through the Wave Tue, 08 Jul 2014 08:06:41 +0000

(Video link HERE.) Some people like watching this with the sound cranked up. We find it more beautiful OFF…

….a reminder of that the path can sometimes be obscured, but we must keep riding through as best we can…
