(Video link here.) Ikea’s creative team is rivaling Apple’s…AND using Apple’s classic myth-making approach to its latest technology to describe the…power…of…a…BOOK. This brilliant ad for IKea’s 2015 catalogue lays out just why REAL books are so wonderful.

With thanks to Susan Dworski for making sure we watched a video we’d ignored!

Sprinkles Cupcake

This little pink ATM in NYC is restocked with yummy cupcakes every night offering 24/7 access to cupcakes. We love the application of the essential idea of an "ATM" to something completely unexpected: cupcakes instead of cash. Why not? ]]>

Save Your Wishbones for the Wishbone Project http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/08/11/save-wishbones-wishbone-project/ http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/08/11/save-wishbones-wishbone-project/#comments Mon, 11 Aug 2014 23:00:38 +0000 http://www.improvisedlife.com/?p=44972

Sally Schneider

Recently, several readers wrote to say they’d saved a pile of wishbones to send to Holton Rower for his monumental art work made of thousands — maybe hundreds of thousands— wishbones. Since we first announced it, our crowd-sourced Wishbone Project has yielded Holton a lot of wishbones. In return, the errant wishbone collectors/donaters receive a thank you gift from Holton.

The last batch he received curiously had a button in it.

Here’s a reminder to SAVE YOUR POULTRY WISHBONES and become part of a sure-to-be wondrous art work.

Making Music with…Rain http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/07/31/making-music-rain/ http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/07/31/making-music-rain/#comments Thu, 31 Jul 2014 08:38:42 +0000 http://www.improvisedlife.com/?p=44295

(Video link HERE.) Recently we stumbled on this video of music made with rain drops. Rain as percussion instrument: MUSIC. It’s pretty swell, and very carefully thought out, with its haute technology and count of rain drops.

We love Fast Forward’s Rain Music for it’s utter in-the-moment directness and accessibility. (Video link HERE.) (more…)

(Video link HERE.) In the annals of “breaking stereotypes” is this thrilling, mind-boggling, closer-than-bird’s-eye view of two Japanese schoolgirls doing seriously Ninja Parcour — usually the realm of young men — all around the city of Atami.

YES!!!!!!

Fredericks & Mae

Fredericks & Mae‘s beautiful Floralia – Fighter kite is meant to hang a wall to IMAGINE flying in air. Made of bamboo, rice paper, pressed flowers, waxed cord, and gold thread, it’s a “ceremonial kite…in honor of the ancient Roman holiday Floralia…a predecessor to May Day, a festival in honor of the titan Flora…goddess of flowers and the season of spring.”

But for us, it is inspiration for diy kites you can fly, like the one we saw the other day being flown from a Harlem rooftop.

Made by Joel has a great tutorial, one of many kite plans available online. (more…)

We found this clever river rock monster on Anonymous Works. It’s a vintage albumen print with year 1915 penciled faintly on the back.

We LOVE that guerrilla art was alive and well a century ago!

AND the idea of being a guerrilla ANYWHERE!

LEGO

Having long been enamored of building blocks both miniature and life-sized for their cool modularity and open invitation to improvise, I find this jumbo building kit from LEGO is the perfect thing for adults to play/plan/build with. Whether to envision a real-life project in small scale or simply get out of your own head for a minute, these blocks are great as an office toy or something to share with a curious, independent kid in your life. Telmo Pieper

Dutch artist Telmo Pieper saved his drawings from childhood. Many years later, he used modern-day digital painting skills to make prototypes. The resulting works comprise his Kiddie Arts Series, an amazing example of a kid’s vision made REAL. (And what an idea THAT is!)

We TOTALLY covet the car and think his beetle is pretty awesome. (more…)

(Video link HERE.) We love Eddy Kenzo’s joyful “Sitya Loss” (“I’m not afraid of losing”), featuring a group of boys and a girl performing on a dirt road in Uganda. After hunting for the lyrics (which are in Swahili), we found this interpretation from youtuber jerzeykid2006able:

“In life we do not have to fear losses because we are the bosses of our own life, we have to enjoy the little life we have by shaking our bodies (dancing), as strong youth we have to enjoy our lives to the fullest because when we look at our past lives, we get to notice quite a (more...)]]> http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/07/23/african-dances-z/feed/ 0 Gif of the Week: Feel the Sand http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/07/22/gif-week-feel-sand/ http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/07/22/gif-week-feel-sand/#comments Tue, 22 Jul 2014 23:00:31 +0000 http://www.improvisedlife.com/?p=43898
