Improvised Life » fun stuff / play If you can't hunt with a dog, hunt with a cat... Thu, 13 Nov 2014 09:20:48 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Going AWOL Thu, 13 Nov 2014 09:20:48 +0000

(Video link HERE.) It has been a TIME the past five months, with serious life events that have continued since June. Just as we’ve gotten our balance, another big wave hits. They say that big things happen in clusters and they have for us; we’ve been improvising like crazy, finding many unexpected answers as we go. (more…)

Waterfall Swing Mon, 10 Nov 2014 22:42:24 +0000

(Video link HERE.) It’s about time someone devised Waterfall Swing. Perfect for warm weather refreshment. We thought. When we read the fine print we discovered that this whole rig of water jets is computerized to predict the action of the rider. The computer creates a “hole” in the wall of water, to allow the rider to swish through without getting wet. (more…)

Trees and Foliage Inspire Street Art Mon, 03 Nov 2014 23:00:46 +0000

I’ve been collecting a stash of graffiti images for a while. They range from cutie kitsch to angry gangbanger to political harangues. The ones I like best combine existing natural foliage with painted images and play around with scale—large and small—creating an improvised, witty, public art gallery. (more…)

Día de los Muertos: A Spirited Celebration to Make Your Own Sat, 01 Nov 2014 07:53:17 +0000

Douglas Merriman

Not at all scary or sad, despite an abundance of skulls and skeletons, the annual Day of the Dead festival, on November 1st and 2nd, is a joyous, Pre-Columbian tradition in Mexico—a time for festive remembrances of departed loved ones whose souls or spirits are dropping by to pay a visit. It is a wilder, more spirit-minded cousin to Halloween, that celebrates death in a joyous, meaningful and colorful way.
Although celebrated in many U.S. communities with large Mexican populations, Albuquerque and Mesilla/Las Cruces have a heritage of celebrating with particular gusto, going all out with a grassroots parade on November 2. “Anyone can be in the parade, as long as they paint on a skeleton’s face and have marigolds, either paper or the real thing,(more…)

(Video link HERE.) OK Go’s wondrous new video is a strangely perfect way to start your day: silly, happy, beautiful. We watched, grooving, with the music on for a minute or so.  But we found it even more beautiful with the music OFF.  (more…)

Build Miniature Worlds for Fun and…Healing Fri, 24 Oct 2014 12:30:47 +0000

Tatsuya Tanaka

Every day of the year for the past four years Japanese artist Tanaka Tatsuya has been obsessively building tiny, witty worlds by pairing midget figurines with common household objects like toilet paper, vegetables, fruit, straws, and noodles.

The project, entitled “Miniature Calendars,” has a weird, whacko charm that escapes kitsch by the sheer volume and variety of the photographer’s output, and inventiveness of his joyful, improvisatory vision. (more…)

Do-able Baking Inspiration from Burrow Thu, 23 Oct 2014 17:00:40 +0000

At a birthday party recently, Maria Robledo presented two utterly charming cakes from Patisserie Burrow, a tiny bakery hidden in the lobby of 68 Jay Street in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood. When you experience the pastries, cookies and cakes created by Ayako Kurokowa, you know an artist is at work. We find ourselves inspired just by looking at her Instagrams, and by her little bio: (more…)

Annals of Hair Design: LaBelle’s Nightbird Platter-Do (with Music) Wed, 22 Oct 2014 23:00:10 +0000

The Hair Hats in our recent Annals of Hair Design reminded me of the great “platter” do, Patti LaBelle wore when performing her album Nightbirds in the 80’s. I loved watching her perform it and wondered how she got that hair to STAY.

Years later, she came to my old studio for a photo shoot and I asked her how she got her hair to make those fabulous platters. (more…)

Fallen Autumn Leaves are a Material for Making Wed, 22 Oct 2014 08:05:02 +0000

Walking in the park the other day, we saw a young woman lying in a huge pile of brightly-colored leaves…half buried really, resting; she looked relaxed and content.  Around her three little girls were all happily making things out of leaves. And we thought LEAVES. What a beautiful material-for-making things all around us.

That got us looking for Fallen Leaf Creations. (more…)

Open Source Systems for Everyday Objects, Food + Living Tue, 21 Oct 2014 21:05:56 +0000

(Video link HERE.) Bio 50 has applied open-source thinking to electronic appliances we use in our homes everyday. They’ve prototyped of a system built upon standard components that offers the user the ability to assemble, customize, repair, and repurpose existing products.

Check out their clever fan, hand mixer, and a balloon-encased lamp all configured from the same elements.  (more…)

Annals of Hair Design: the Hair Hat! Thu, 16 Oct 2014 21:00:46 +0000

We are continually amazed at the mighty improvisational and creative brilliance-in-the-realm-of-hair-dos we see around town daily. But these hair hats may take the cake.

We don’t know HOW this Caucasian guy got his bone-straight hair to stay put (or why?… the mysteries of the artist’s impulse).

Dig this African American version. The bill can be worn in front…

How to Dance on the Side of a Building (Video) Mon, 06 Oct 2014 21:08:09 +0000

(Video link HERE.) Don’t know about you, but we could use some fantasy flying about now.

Although we find ourselves a bit over saturated with GoPri videos and curiously jaded to their magical effects, not so with this video of acrobats “dancing” on the side of a building.  We find it even more magical with the sound OFF.
