This simple photo gives an unexpected shift of view –  perfect for a new year. It’s from Scattered Light a participatory photo project and exhibition designed to

“re-acquaint the viewer to his/her surrounding environment and introduce another way of seeing and interpreting the things around them.”

It is the brainchild of ASDF: a series of posters generated from photos created by anybody who wants to  respond to the theme, like  “A view of a flat horizon line over land or water.”  Right-side-up, the photo, above, is pretty ordinary; sometimes turning things on their head is what does the trick.

That’s what ‘the improvised life’ set out to do when it launched six months ago: inspire you to create, invent, be resourceful, make it up as you go along…turn things upside-down or sideways or inside out to see what might be possible. We are incredibly grateful and counting big blessings on our half-year birthday, for the readers who have been ‘in there’ with us with comments, moral support, emails and growing numbers that say “YES!”.

In return, we’re shouting our heartfelt THANKS!. We’re looking forward to the next six months, and hatching big plots for ‘the improvised life’.

  1. Agreed! I’ve listened to your interviews on the Splendid Table for the last couple of years. I’ve always envied your ability to improvise in the kitchen. I didn’t know about the blog until I went looking to buy a copy of your book online and found your websites.

The Improvised Life…I’ve always tried to plan things down to the wire and my husband doesn’t know how to plan for dinner…It’s been a tough issue to compromise over. However, I think your blog has a chance at pointing the way for me to let go and loosen up a bit. Thank you!

Also, thank you for the improvsied chocolate recipes. Since I made a double layer bark with milk chocolate and white chocolate, it came out about a half inch thick, but the peppermint bits I put in the white chocolate made it a real hit for Christmas! One of my friends wants more for her birthday this month.

    Keep it up!

  2. This blog, this idea of improvising, is what i need in my life right now. I have been too rigid in the past, but there is no looking back, only forward…so into the future with improvisation I go. Thanks for the push!

  3. Hi Melissa, thanks for your comment. For my money, we all could use this idea of improvising…to be reminded. The blog reminds and teaches me constantly…

  4. Hi Penny, it’s step-by-step, this idea of loosening up. It sounds like you’ve already started with your improvisation on the chocolate bark idea: what a whammy of chocolate and mint! And you’ve shown that once you know the gist, and if you’re willing to try your ideas out, you do end up somewhere interesting if not swell.

  5. Splendid photos! As a photographer, I want to push myself into this kind of vision – seeing ordinary things in an extraordinary way! To “sea differently!”
