Last Wednesday evening, our friend Sharase DeBouse suddenly said: It’s January 15th! It’s Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday!

And sure enough it was, so right away we went hunting for a quote which we posted with the headline “Martin Luther King Day 2014“. Which it wasn’t. The celebration of his life is the third Monday in January: today. So we’ve decided to post his stunning words again, along with Sharase’s:

I have always been amazed by the incredible words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  I have to tell you, listening to his speeches have kept me at times that I felt I was in my darkest hours.
We love Sharase’s use of words. King’s speeches “kept her”, got her through, reminded her that change was possible.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

We’ll be taking the day off to listen to the tributes and reflect. We’ll be back tomorrow.

  1. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideology is one that resonates with all facets of human existence. We are blessed that Dr. King achieved so much throughout his life and that we can honor a legacy that proportionately was meant to better America and all nations around the world. Every year, I’m reminded just how much this man sacrificed so that everyone else could have a better life beyond his on individual pursuits and existence. He was very young when he died and even younger when he was walking the walk to meet challenges head on! Amazing! One could spend a life time studying King’s profuse thinking, speeches, and work in the worlds struggle for Civil Rights. There is one quote of his that I keep especially close to the heart:

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Real change is the result of DOING.
