Recently, our friend Jane Lear wrote us to say “This great tip stuck in my head, and I finally had a chance to reference it in this week’s food advice column for TakePart about ways to use less water.

The tip that stuck in her head —YAY! we LOVE that— was wine and spirits writer Anthony Giglio’s inspired practice of writing the name of each guest on his/her wine glass to cut down on “lost” glasses (and the attendant OMG-there-aren’t-enough-glasses stress). Anthony uses a china marker, a wax or grease pencil that writes perfectly on glass or china and washes away in the dishwasher.

Jane applied the idea to water glasses. They too suffer from “lost my glass” syndrome. Writes Jane:

To cut down on the number of glasses to wash, have family members choose one for their drinking water each day and mark their names on them with a dry-erase marker or a Dixon Phano china marker… Keep a supply of the chic white markers to use for parties…The marked glasses also serve as a rather covert and elegant name tag for guests

Over the years, we’ve tested various markers’ ability to write on glass, and be easily removed. Even a Sharpie will work, thought it takes a big of scrubbing to remove. (We haven’t tried a crayon…) The gist, you can use this great technique without buying anything special.
