We check into Improvised Life part-time support staff and contributor Sinnae Choi’s website periodically to see what the multi-talented artist is up to. We were amazed at the LOL beauty of the human hair merkins she collaborated on… And learned that a merkin is by definition a pubic wig.

Who knew? and… Why not?!!   Writes Choi and her collaborator:

We collected hair trimmings and created pubic wigs for ourselves, a sort of double portrait to celebrate our friendship and the lushness of our imagined fantasy mounds.

Will wonders never cease!!!!

  1. Ugh. Seriously? That is beyond disgusting.

  2. Improvised life is my go to blog everyday… i even subscribe.. btw sorry for your loss and your friend so ailing.. but i do have to voice my first opinion.. i hated the pubic hair wigs then to top it off we could scroll down to the other piece with the pianos “deconstructing”..my second least favorite.. as a child i could not afford a piano and now have no space to put one.. its a dream of mine to sit down and play.. so when i see one burning it sort of grabs at my heart strings.. but this is silly ranting when health and death are at hand..be well

  3. No, no, not silly ranting. I’m glad to know what you think. Everything we post here represent possiblities, shifts of view…and is definitely not going to be loved or embraced by everyone.

  4. I’m late to the party here but would like to speak out in favor – – not necessarily in favor of pubic wigs, but in favor of their inclusion on Sally’s blog. My son just dyed his mohawk the same purple/blue as the one on the right, and I was not at all happy about it, but we sat down and talked a bit. What he’s done with his hair certainly counts as body modification, but it’s not permanent, as a piercing or tattoo would be, so in the end I agreed to let him walk around that way for a while. These merkins strike me the same way, except not visible when walking down the street. And compared to the piercings and studdings and “vajazzlings” we hear about, let alone the various forms of genital mutilation imposed on women all over the world, these merkins seem like a whimsical way to decorate an intimate space, using materials at hand, in order to make a statement to oneself (and perhaps a lover too) about how one would like the world to be. And if that isn’t what Improvised Life is all about . . .

  5. Thank you Jim for speaking up on what turns out to be a surprisingly complex subject. AND the very helpful approach of simply sitting down and talking to your son, to understand his point of view.

You’ve articulated why I chose to post Sinnae’s artwork (better than I could have done).
