We love this detail from a home designed by i29 Interior Architects: a spray of cut-outs in a wall of cabinetry. It breaks up the uniformity of the cabinets in a random, rather artful way. It applies a technique we love — unexpected holes cut out of walls — to cabinets.

Don’t want to worry about seeing what’s hidden behind the cabinet doors (and having to keep your stuff neat)? Check out this possibility:

In the image belw, the side of the cabinet/wall has an underlayer of wood — the cabinet’s underpinning—under the cut-out surface. An underlayer of SOMETHING —wood, fabric, glass,  in a neutral or color —would be a way to go to show the holes without what’s stored in the cabinet.
