Something boldly improvisational and cheery going on in this house in Australia” wrote Susan Dworski in an email as she described the home Ruth Bruten, writer of Gourmet Girlfriend blog, shares with her husband and five boys. It is delightfully REAL and colorful, and packed with ideas. Here are Susan’s favorites, and ours:

I love her use of Marimekko paper napkins as wallpaper,...

the tower of fruit and the bright red flower chair around the door,

...and the weird red chandelier in the bathroom.”

We love the red masking tape heart in one of the boy’s rooms with the chic red red Kartell Componibili storage by the bed …

…and especially, the kitchen, at top, which is packed with interesting ideas: The bright mix of colorful objects makes the range hood, which usually figures too prominently in kitchens, happily disappear. The freestanding cabinets are integrated via a hardwood top; spaces between them allow for storing cutting boards. We like the table added at the end of the counter with an aluminum top that somehow makes it seem part of the rest of the counters.  The floors appear to be lightly white-washed plywood…
Susan pointed out the most important detail, expressed by Bruten herself:
This home really is living document of our family – it is messy, it is cluttered with objects that tell our story, it is full of colour, it is full of people, it doesn’t always make sense, and it is filled with the happy noise of life being lived.’
