Photographer/filmmaker Gigi de la Torre sent us this sign with an incisive observation:

I was checking your SignLaboratory Instagram and remembered that I had this on my fridge. I took a pic for you. That was a couple of days ago. Then my cat took the paper a put it in his water fountain, so it’s gone… It made me think that signs have an expiration date sometimes 🙂

Signs definitely have an expiration date, although it is hard to say in advance what they are. As we see the same sign over and over, we often gradually become blind to it. We know from experience; we rely put up signs around our space to shift our thinking or remind us of where/how we want to be.

We take them down when they no longer have meaning, but find that some stay up for years. This tiny fragment from has been on our fridge for almost 20 years.

Which is why we created SignLaboratory, our instagram of found and homemade signs that inspire. It changes daily, but if you love a sign, you can easily send it to yourself to view as long as you want.

We rely on signs…

  1. The first one just pisses me off. Dealing with major depression is not a choice. I so wish I could just decide to be happy.

  2. I hear you, Niheala and feel the same. But bear in mind that this was Gigi’s choice of sign, for what she needs. What resonates in a sign is very personal.
