Every morning when we open our office for work, we take a minute to look at this image taped on the wall, of artist Lucio Fontana approaching a blank canvas. We never tire of it.
That canvas for us can mean a project, or a new path or simply the day…full of possibility.
We admire Fontana’s courage, forthrightly walking up to a blank canvas to make the first mark that will determine the ones to come.
The image is a kind of fuel, and a reminder to have courage and START…
Begin anywhere.
We know that once we do, any fear will recede and ideas will come to meet us. Gary Snyder described this very amazing and mysterious process in “How Poetry Comes to Me“*
It comes blundering over the
Boulders at night, it stays
Frightened outside the
Range of my campfire
I go to meet it at the
Edge of the light”
We take heart in the idea that each day, each moment, is a blank canvas…with many ways to make a mark…
Wonderful. I am going to try to remember this at 3 in the morning when all I can think of is the very full canvas left over from yesterday!
Yes, there’s always so much undone.
But starting totally fresh, imagining spaciousness and possibility is lovely and heartening first thing.
Thank you for this!
I need a copy of this near my desk as a constant reminder.
So gorgeous and artistic. It was really inspiring to see this post, thanks!
I can’t tell you how powerful that photo has been, and continues to be. A big fat much-needed
reminder.
